50 years of improvement in car safety

For those of us who still think that "they don't make cars like they used to", watch this video clip. It's a crash test video of a 1959 Chevy Bel Air hitting a 2009 Chev Malibu, and it's rather eye-opening. Car safety has come a long way.

Holy crap. That Malibu drove into the Bel Air's engine compartment like it wasn't there. It must have displaced the whole engine block. The modern composites really are that much better!

I think the way the body crumples simply works so much better, crumpling away from the passengers. Damn impressive.

Holy cow...

I used to own a 1976 Malibu. I wonder how that would have held up against the current one. That thing seemed like a tank, but I was a teenager at the time...
