"Blown By The Wind"
Wednesday, 17 December 2008 14:33Given the public holiday yesterday, I did a bit of catching up on movies, and got some DVDs out from the video shop.

Children of Men was interesting, though a little tedious in parts. One thing I can say about it: the British are definitely best at fascist post-apocalyptic states (see also 28 Days Later, V for Vendetta, and others).

Flood was long, really long; I think it was originally done as a miniseries. It's a disaster movie - basically, about London being flooded by a huge storm. I was prepared for another disaster movie with totally implausible science, like The Day after Tomorrow, but I did some reading on Wikipedia afterward on storm surges and the Thames Barrier, and the science is pretty much spot on. Acting was good, I thought; there was the usual collection of good mostly-British actors, with some I particularly liked, like Jessalyn Gilsig (who plays Meredith Gordon in Heroes), and Joanne Whalley, whom I have liked ever since Willow.

The Invasion I watched primarily because I have ahard soft spot for Nicole Kidman. I did enjoy it, though it was relatively typical as zombie movies go. It was cool seeing a Jag being driven hell-for-leather - another reason I wanted to see it. I thought Nicole Kidman worked well in the role; given that the character had to try to appear emotionless, the Botox must have been handy. The tight pullovers really made her look outstanding, I must say.
