Here's a bit of interesting stuff for Friday.

Firstly, here's a scan of the menu from a Wimpy (for non-South Africans - an eat-in burger restaurant) from 1983. I don't know what exchange rates were like then - probably around R2 to the US$, but currently the rate is about R7.40 to the US$.

Secondly, here's one of the Grade 12 final mathematics papers for 2009. Apparently something like 60% or so of the students writing this exam failed it. I thought it was relatively easy, especially considering the students had a formula sheet in the exam.

Grade 12 as in Matric?

I failed Higher Grade in std 9 and nearly flunked Standard Grade in matric. I reckon I would have passed THIS paper no problem (not that I could now!)

Yep, Matric. That looks like the sort of algebra I did in Std 7 (Grade 9).

The UK had Wimpy for years. Then McDonalds iced them off most of the face of the earth. There may be the odd one about the place still, but I've not seen one since the 1980s.

I am too removed from math, unfortunately. I could probably eventually figure the problems out but I think it would take a long time since I am not studying that at the moment.

Amazing how much one forgets over the years. I could have done this at one point, but I can't now. I figure I could easily study up and get back to this level of ability though, and better.

I cannot remember how to solve most of this stuff, but I do remember that the questions are straightforward enough for most pupils to crack - no trick questions/ Also, we never got a formula sheet for our exams!
