I would totally have a lair that was part fortifications above, and sea caves (with space to sail ships into) below. On a Caribbean island, naturally.
On a related topic, I had an amusing hour or two the other day reading up in Wikipedia about pirates like Mary Read, Ann Bonney, Rackham, Blackbeard, and also about Port Royal and the great earthquake. Quite fascinating.
